The history and times of a village


	With a population comprising 865 souls, Cairanne has retained the spirit of a real village. Here, everyone knows everybody and the traditions, knowledge and expertise in winemaking have been transmitted from father to son (or daughter) for generations. In Cairanne family trees are like the "souche" of wine. Everyone appears to be part of a root or branch of the same family, connections to which are everywhere. In Cairanne, the relationship between those who choose to be part of a cooperative wine making enterprise and individual "vignerons" has been in balance for some considerable time. People here are, first and foremost, winemakers, who are working towards the same ends and share the same purpose. Come, share and enjoy the fruits of their labour ! The village's vocation was always been nature of the vine and wine making. Celts and roman gauls have each has left their mark here. All traces bear testimony to a deference for the soil and the quality of its produce. During the Middle Ages Cairanne was the property of the "knights templar", then was ceded to Pope Jean XXII, benefit to him being paid in wine. Later the Simiane family owned and dominated the village for several generations, they were eventually superseded by the Cambis family who were landlords until the revolution in 1789. .
