Cairanne Villages : pleasurable wines to enjoy now and those to put in the cellar to develop
The vines of Cairanne are planted on the border of two winemaking traditions. That of the Rhône septentrional where Syrah in the dominant grape variety and that of the Rhône méridionale where Grenache and Mourvèdre predominate. These three fine varieties respond superbly well to the climate and growing conditions in Cairanne.
The Grenache has traditionally held « pride of place » here, it produces big, round, generous wines of excellent structure. Wines which are capable of finesse, have fine fruit aromas with connotations of game and truffles.
The Syrah (known as shiraz in Austalia) is early ripening and brings profound colour and soft « melting » tannins.
The Mourvèdre loves the sun. It allow wine to develop giving a structure that will develop for considerable time.
White wines are made from a number of wine varieties, allowed by the A.O.C. they are often blends (though not always so) of two or more grape varieties from Grenache blanc, clairette, bourboulenc, marsanne, roussane and viognier which offer notes of citrus flowers, of white fruits and flowers : acacia, may flowers (hawthorn) and violets.
With food these wines are excellent accompaniment with numerous recipes and can be drunk throughout the meal. White wine is offered as an aperitif, with grilled fish, or fish in sauce and with white meat. Rosé wines go very well with cooked cold meats, charcuteries and grilled white meat. Red wines are rather powerful and as such, are ideal to accompany elaborate dishes, spicy food and good cheese.
