During the last ten years, the development of the production of Côtes du Rhône wines has stabilised. The sales of Côtes du Rhône Villages wines (wines of stricter production criteria and quality) and wines of "Cru" status (for example Vacqueyras, Gigondas, Châteauneuf du Pape) have however grown progressively. The sales of Côtes du Rhône Villages Cairanne echoes and confirms this trends. Proof is clearly visible in the increase in area under vines in production, more than 200 hectares planted during the years 1999-2001.
The area of land producing wine in 2003 was 810 hectares , these vines produced 30 738 hectolitres in that year.

The first among the Côtes du Rhône Villages
In 2001, the appellation Côtes du Rhône Villages made up 12% of the Côtes du Rhône vineyard, with 7.880 hectares in production and 10% of the volume of wine produced.
Cairanne is the largest of the Villages, those communes which have been designated as capable of the production of wines which meet the criteria for Côtes du Rhône Villages . The village planting represent 8% of the total of all appellations Villages.
In 2001, the production of appellation Villages Cairanne wines in the commune of Cairanne had reached almost 70% of all acreage, that is potentially classified, a total of 1 250 hectares .
So the appellation is capable of enlargement. The tendency is towards new plantings and there is yet more land within the Cairanne appellation which could be brought into production. The tendency towards new plantings appears contrary to the progress made to improve quality. The wine makers of Cairanne however, have not forgotten that their objective and first priority is to make better wine.

Where to find Cairanne wines ?
One is tempted to say everywhere ! In effect, between the Cave Coopérative and individual wines makers commercial activities burst forth into the whole of France and its territories. Involvement is actively pursued in all the nation organisations which promote wine : CHR, winemakers, large distributors and national tasting events for the public and professional.
Cairanne wines are exported, in large part, within the European community and Switzerland , followed in volume to the United States , Canada and Asia .
