The soil ...

The vineyards of Cairanne are situated on soils as varied as those of the region as a whole. Three soil types are predominant in the special soils of Côtes du Rhône Villages Cairanne :

In the north of the commune, hillsides of white calcareous clays make up the southern slope of the steep hillside : « Montagne ». Above 320 metres, they flatten gradually to the south. There stretches, what it essentially, a vast terrace of pebbly rock called locally "God's Plain". (So called because this wood, which then grew there, was a spot where highway men took the valuables that unfortunate travellers carried and the travellers then rendered their souls to God).

Swept by the Mistral, two large terraces stretch from south to the west : the soils of the « Garrigues », (sparse sun baked areas of rosemary and shrub) are made up red clays and the soils formed by the river Aygues. These consist of alluvial silt and pebbles..

The final, area under vines, to the north-west of the village itself, is the "Bayes" composed of siliceous soils. The quarters known as the "high river banks and bays"..

The climate is of a classical Mediterranean type.

... This artist's palette of soils plays a very important and undeniable role in development of the character of the wines of Cairanne.
White limestone clays, are cold soils, which give wines with firm tannins and structure. Powerful wines of great depth and colour, big wines with the potential to age well.

Red clays help create fuller, richer more generous wines with a more floral, accessible, rounder, more aromatic bouquet.

The terraces close to the Aygues river are made up of rich river deposited alluvia with some glacial debris. The wines here are noted or their supple, soft qualities.

Clearly the soils of such wide diversity have excellent potential for the creation of blending opportunities structure. The taste of quality in the wines of Cairanne.
